General Description
GoGreenSalt is a road salt mixture that combines conventional de-icing salt with finely ground olivine (greenSand). When spread on roads and exposed to water, the olivine undergoes natural weathering, permanently binding atmospheric CO₂ into stable carbonates. This process also helps counteract acidification and provides co-benefits such as improved road grip and reduced moss growth. GoGreenSalt has been developed and tested for over 15 years, with each batch certified to meet safety standards regarding heavy metals. The GoGreenSalt mix is 75% regular road salt and 25% greenSand olivine.
Project Description
Jos Scholman Materiaal B.V. applied 992 tonnes of GoGreenSalt, containing 25% olivine. This corresponds to 248 tonnes of olivine spread on roads and public spaces, which will gradually weather and permanently remove CO₂ from the atmosphere. Using the Knops & Vink model for the 0–2 mm particle size fraction, and accounting for associated emissions, the expected net removal is 59 tonnes of CO₂ over a 100-year period.
The Remover
Jos Scholman Materiaal B.V., part of the Dutch family-owned Jos Scholman group, is the Remover for this project. Active in infrastructure, earthworks, and public space management, the company has purchased and deployed GoGreenSalt in its winter road maintenance operations. By spreading this material across public roads and spaces, Jos Scholman enables large-scale olivine weathering and measurable CO₂ removal within existing municipal workflows.
