Project details
This project establishes a 100-hectare bamboo-based carbon removal system on degraded and largely fallow land in Kasasa, Uganda. The land, owned by the Our Lady of Victoria Monastery in Kijonjo, had low soil carbon content, minimal vegetation and was prone to flooding during the rainy season and drought during dry periods. Bamboo was selected for its ability to thrive in nutrient-poor soils without intensive fertilisation, and for its rapid growth and high carbon sequestration potential.
The project increases Total Ecosystem Carbon (TEC) through the growth of bamboo biomass and improvements in soil organic carbon. Existing trees on the land are preserved and integrated into the system. In later phases, as bamboo cultivation improves the soil's humus layer, native tree species will be added. Where soil conditions allow, vegetables and fruit crops may be grown alongside the bamboo planting.
Beyond carbon removal, the bamboo harvest will be used to produce sustainable local materials including paper and sanitary products, with waste material used for energy generation in the form of briquettes. The project aims to reduce dependence on natural forest resources and contribute to long-term land regeneration.

Bamboo Carbon Farm Limited is a Ugandan company based in Kampala, legally represented by HS Green Energy Engineering Solutions Ltd (represented by Henry Wasajja) and Peter Franciscus Majoor. The company was established with the support of the Abbey of Our Lady of Koningshoeven in Berkel-Enschot, the Netherlands, to manage all carbon credit activities on behalf of the Our Lady of Victoria Monastery in Kijonjo, Uganda. The monastery, part of the global Cistercian community, leases 100 hectares of land to Bamboo Carbon Farm Limited for the project, combining climate action with its long-term mission of contributing to the wellbeing of the surrounding community.
