General Description

GoGreenSalt is a road salt mixture that combines conventional de-icing salt with finely ground olivine (greenSand). When spread on roads and hard surfaces and exposed to water, the olivine undergoes natural enhanced rock weathering, permanently binding atmospheric CO₂ into stable carbonates. The GoGreenSalt mix consists of 75% conventional road salt and 25% olivine, sourced from Sibelco's Åheim mine in Norway. GoGreenSalt is applied as a direct replacement for conventional road salt in winter gritting operations.

Project Description

KZ Aanneming & Groenvoorziening B.V. applied GoGreenSalt across various locations around Middenmeer in the 2025/2026 winter season, primarily on the grounds of Microsoft's campus, including car parks, access roads and other areas requiring ice and frost treatment. The olivine contained in the mixture will gradually weather upon exposure to rainwater, permanently sequestering CO₂ from the atmosphere over a 100-year period. The project was developed and submitted by PVM Trading B.V., supplier of GoGreenSalt and coordinator of the certification process.

The Remover

KZ Aanneming & Groenvoorziening B.V. is a Dutch civil engineering and green space management company based in Middenmeer, Noord-Holland. The company is responsible for the maintenance of outdoor spaces and infrastructure, including winter gritting services. By choosing GoGreenSalt over conventional road salt, KZ Aanneming & Groenvoorziening integrates carbon removal directly into its existing operational workflows, enabling CO₂ sequestration as a co-benefit of routine gritting activities.
