Project details
In 2026, Dettifoss BV established a 2.5-hectare paulownia agroforestry system in Lier, in the Belgian province of Antwerp. Approximately 800 trees of the Paulownia Changtong cultivar were planted, combining timber production with continued agricultural use of the land. The first harvest is planned in 2034, with 50% of the trees harvested that year and the remaining 50% in 2035, after which the cycle repeats every seven years.
The project focuses on increasing total ecosystem carbon storage through the establishment and long-term management of a fast-growing paulownia system. Carbon is stored in above-ground biomass, below-ground root biomass, and soil organic carbon. Additional tree species have been planted alongside the paulownia to enhance biodiversity on the site.
