Project Description

The Maatschap Noordhoff project enhances carbon sequestration and ecosystem health through a broad suite of regenerative practices. Originally a conventional grain farm, the business has transitioned to organic farming, integrating diverse strategies such as strip cropping, mixed cropping, non-inversion tillage (NKG), and the use of green manure mixtures. Soil fertility is further supported with rough farmyard manure and reduced soil compaction techniques. Natural pest control methods and permanent landscape elements contribute to ecological resilience, while improved soil organic matter boosts long-term carbon storage. These combined measures not only lock carbon in the soil but also increase biodiversity and reduce input dependency.

Remover Information

Gert Noordhoff is a forward-thinking Dutch farmer who has transformed Maatschap Noordhoff into a model for agroecological innovation. Motivated by a desire to enhance biodiversity, crop resilience, and economic viability, Gert adopted strip cropping as part of a research collaboration with Wageningen University. He combines sustainable farming with entrepreneurial initiatives, processing and marketing his products via niche brands like Bax Bier, Zilte Jenever, and through local artisan food networks. Gert also builds connections with consumers through unique farm-based dining experiences, reinforcing transparency and engagement around food and farming.
