Project description
L. Akkermans Boomkwekerijen is establishing a 1.9-hectare plantation of fast-growing Paulownia trees in Maashees, The Netherlands. The system is designed to increase Total Ecosystem Carbon (TEC) by storing carbon in both biomass and soil.
The planting approach integrates biodiversity-friendly practices — organic soil amendments, edge-planting with fruit trees and flowering species, and manual/ mechanical weed control — aiming to foster ecological resilience. After 10–12 years, timber harvest is planned, with wood allocated for long-lived uses such as construction, maximizing carbon permanence. The initiative supports circular bio-economy goals and adds to sustainable land use in the region.
