Project description
The farmer is implementing a range of soil health practices aimed at increasing soil organic matter and ultimately boosting humus content. After harvesting soybeans, he sows a winter catch crop—this year mustard—which is incorporated into the soil in spring using a disc harrow. This method reduces fuel use per hectare compared to deeper incorporation techniques. He also avoids plowing for crops like wheat and soybeans, leaving straw residues on the field and mixing them into the soil rather than removing them. This continuous rotation—soybeans followed by wheat, with straw and catch crops retained and incorporated—supports organic matter buildup. The farmer is also open to adapting his practices based on further recommendations to enhance humus formation, as discussed during previous consultations.
