Project details

The Paulownia – Fam. Arts Rosékalverhouderij project establishes a 1.5-hectare Paulownia plantation on farmland in Haps, The Netherlands. In spring 2025, 1,200 Paulownia tomentosa Shan Tong trees were planted at a spacing of 3 by 4 metres, designed for optimal growth and carbon uptake. To enhance biodiversity and create a more resilient ecosystem, sixty fruit trees were planted among the Paulownia rows. The site is part of the family-owned holding of Arts Agri V.O.F. Harvesting is planned once the trees reach suitable timber size, estimated at around ten years, with the potential for natural regrowth or selective continuation of the stand thereafter.

Luc and Cecilia Arts, representing Arts Agri V.O.F. and the Fam. Arts Rosékalverhouderij, manages the Paulownia project as part of a broader transition toward sustainable and circular agriculture. The family business, rooted in livestock and crop production, integrates innovative agroforestry practices to improve soil health, biodiversity, and long-term carbon capture. The initiative demonstrates how active farmers can contribute to climate mitigation while maintaining productive use of agricultural land. Through hands-on management, the Arts family ensures that the plantation develops in harmony with the surrounding landscape and continues to benefit both the environment and the local farming community.
