About the project

This project enables the long-term storage of carbon that has been removed from the atmosphere through photosynthesis and locked away in timber components produced by DERIX. Using high-performance glulam and X-LAM (cross laminated timber), DERIX provides essential building elements that support both the structure and the sustainability of modern construction.

Timber used by DERIX is PEFC-certified and primarily sourced from sustainably managed spruce forests. Through innovative engineering, these natural materials are transformed into custom structural elements—columns, beams, roof forms, and panels—that are then integrated into buildings. This not only replaces more carbon-intensive materials like steel and concrete but ensures that the carbon stored by trees remains locked within the structure for decades.

Both glulam and X-LAM offer strong, load-bearing solutions while also enabling design freedom and construction efficiency. Their prefabricated nature ensures fast, clean assembly on site, reducing waste and construction time. In buildings designed for disassembly, DERIX even offers a take-back program to refurbish and reuse components, extending their lifecycle and minimizing environmental impact.

By embedding carbon in durable structures, DERIX contributes to a built environment that actively supports climate goals and paves the way for circularity in construction.

DERIX is a family-owned company with decades of experience in timber construction. Based in Germany, DERIX specialises in engineered wood systems and contributes to a more sustainable built environment through the use of renewable materials and circular construction principles.

The company’s role in this project is to provide timber elements that make long-term carbon storage possible. DERIX manufactures glulam and cross laminated timber (X-LAM) components that serve as structural elements in buildings. By working with PEFC-certified wood and designing for durability and reuse, DERIX helps ensure that carbon absorbed by trees during growth is stored in buildings for as long as possible.

Beyond production, DERIX supports the idea of a circular life cycle for building materials. If buildings are designed to be dismantled, DERIX can take back components for potential reuse in other structures. This approach aligns with the company’s broader aim: to make timber construction more resource-efficient and climate-conscious.
