Project Description
The SBCC Bamboo Carbon Removal Project is located in the Moyamba District of Sierra Leone, where sustainably managed bamboo is being established on degraded grassland and shrubland that was previously not used for productive forestry. The project contributes to long-term atmospheric carbon removal while restoring degraded landscapes, strengthening climate resilience, enhancing biodiversity and creating long-term economic opportunities for local communities.
Bamboo is one of the world's fastest-growing plants and is highly effective at capturing atmospheric carbon dioxide through rapid biomass production and extensive rhizome development. Unlike traditional forestry, bamboo regenerates naturally after harvesting, eliminating the need for repeated replanting and enabling continuous carbon accumulation over many decades.
Durable carbon removal
The project is designed to maximize durable atmospheric carbon removal through sustainable bamboo management. Carbon is continuously removed from the atmosphere through rapid biomass growth, while a significant proportion is stored below ground in the rhizome and root system. Because bamboo regenerates naturally after harvesting, the underground biomass remains intact and continues to accumulate carbon over successive harvesting cycles.
Harvested bamboo is managed in accordance with the project's approved carbon accounting methodology, ensuring that harvested biomass is continuously replaced through rapid regrowth while maximizing long-term carbon storage in below-ground biomass.
Beyond carbon removal, the project generates measurable environmental and social co-benefits. Bamboo improves soil structure, reduces erosion, increases soil organic carbon, enhances water retention and supports the restoration of degraded land. The permanent vegetation cover creates habitat for wildlife, contributes to biodiversity enhancement and improves ecosystem resilience. At the same time, the project creates stable employment, transfers technical knowledge and generates sustainable income opportunities for surrounding communities.
The project follows internationally recognized carbon accounting principles and is registered under the ONCRA Carbon Removal Certification framework. Independent validation, continuous monitoring and third-party verification will ensure that the generated CRUs represent high-quality, scientifically robust and transparent atmospheric carbon removals.
About the Remover
SBCC is a project developer dedicated to nature-based carbon removal and the sustainable production of renewable bamboo resources in West Africa.
SBCC develops, owns and manages bamboo plantations on degraded land using sustainable land management practices that restore ecosystems while generating high-quality carbon removals. The company integrates climate action with responsible economic development by creating renewable bamboo value chains that provide long-term employment, strengthen rural livelihoods and supply sustainable raw materials to international markets.
The Sierra Leone project has been established without the conversion of natural forests or high conservation value areas. By restoring degraded grassland and shrubland, SBCC contributes to improved soil health, enhanced biodiversity, greater water retention and increased climate resilience.
SBCC's long-term vision is to demonstrate that well-managed bamboo landscapes can simultaneously deliver durable atmospheric carbon removal, ecosystem restoration and sustainable economic development. Through transparent carbon accounting, rigorous monitoring and independent third-party verification, the company is committed to delivering carbon removals that meet the highest standards of environmental integrity and scientific credibility
