Project Description
In 2025, Scheepsma Forestry established a 3.49-hectare paulownia system in Opende, in the province of Groningen, the Netherlands. The project focuses on increasing total ecosystem carbon (TEC) storage through the planting and long-term management of fast-growing Paulownia trees, combined with fruit trees to enhance biodiversity. Carbon is stored in above-ground biomass, below-ground root biomass, and soil organic carbon (SOC). The project is managed without the use of pesticides or harmful substances.
About the Remover
The project is owned and operated by Scheepsma Forestry, founded by Sipke Scheepsma and based in Surhuizum, Friesland. Scheepsma Forestry plants and manages fast-growing Paulownia trees on Dutch soil, with a focus on combining carbon sequestration with biodiversity gains and soil improvement. The company positions itself as a local, transparent alternative for businesses and individuals looking to offset their CO₂ emissions through certified nature-based carbon removal on Dutch land.
