General Description
The Zeleni Kruchi Ecovillage project is a land restoration initiative located in central Ukraine. Over the past eight years, restoration has taken place by the eco-village community with the help of city volunteers, transforming it into a thriving biodiversity sanctuary amidst conventional agricultural fields.
The project plays a crucial role in protecting local species, increasing biodiversity, and preventing slope erosion. By capturing CO2 through soil and organic matter, the project actively contributes to climate change mitigation. It also provides a healing environment for individuals affected by war, offering garden therapy as a means of rehabilitation.
Utilizing permaculture and biodynamic techniques, the project employs mulching, chop-and-drop methods, aromatic plants, and biodynamic preparations to foster ecological resilience and sustainability. The cultivated land also produces a variety of fruits, supporting both food sovereignty and local ecological health.
The Remover
The Zeleni Kruchi Regenerative Project is led by Anastasiya and the residents of the Zeleni Kruchi eco-village. Anastasiya, who has dedicated over a decade to organic agriculture and sustainable living, serves as the president of the Ukrainian Permaculture Society. She and her husband moved to the eco-village 12 years ago with the goal of growing their own food and fostering an organic, sustainable community.
The Zeleni Kruchi eco-village, founded in 2012, is home to 35 residents, including 12 children. With 27 people staying year-round, the village is structured around seven core families who share a commitment to ecological living, health, and happiness. The community follows permaculture principles, striving for food self-sufficiency while maintaining a deep connection with nature.
The eco-village infrastructure supports sustainable living with personal wells, solar panels, a local shop, a post office, fiber-optic internet, and access to public transportation. Community members earn a livelihood through remote work, local employment, events, and sales of organic products. A part-time kindergarten operates to serve families within the village.
Zeleni Kruchi has been an active member of GEN Ukraine since 2018 and GEN Europe since 2021, engaging in broader ecological and regenerative networks to share knowledge and collaborate on sustainability initiatives.
