Located in Wijk bij Duurstede, Netherlands, Bosvol Smaak is a food forest project that combines ecological restoration with education and local food production. Launched in 2024, it aims to enhance biodiversity, regenerate the soil, and connect people with nature through hands-on learning experiences.

The project focuses on increasing biodiversity by cultivating a wide variety of edible trees and plants while improving soil health and water retention through regenerative farming practices. By creating a rich and resilient ecosystem, Bosvol Smaak fosters a space where both nature and people can thrive.

Education is at the heart of the initiative, offering schoolchildren and the wider community opportunities to engage with the land through outdoor lessons, guided foraging walks, and volunteer work. A small-scale nursery within the food forest will supply high-quality edible plants to other sustainable projects, further expanding its impact.

The forest is designed using syntropic farming principles, incorporating pioneer species, organic mulch, and a no-pesticide approach to ensure long-term soil fertility and ecosystem balance. Windbreaks, ponds, and diverse plantings provide habitats for wildlife, reinforcing the project's commitment to environmental regeneration.

To sustain itself, Bosvol Smaak generates revenue through educational programs, guided tours, plant and produce sales, and the rental of outdoor spaces for workshops and wellness activities. Seasonal harvest experiences and potential food box subscriptions further connect the community to local, sustainable food sources.

Since 2024, the project has made significant progress, with soil preparation and initial tree planting completed. Moving into 2025, efforts will expand to include further planting, community engagement activities, and the development of the nursery. Bosvol Smaak serves as a model for integrating food production, education, and ecosystem restoration, demonstrating a scalable and sustainable approach to land use.
