About the Project

Moos Appelweg is a landmark biobased housing development in Amsterdam-Noord that redefines what fast, sustainable urban living can look like. Completed in just nine months, the project delivers 63 modular homes built from a demountable timber system that meets permanent building standards while remaining fully relocatable. Designed for housing association Ymere and the Municipality of Amsterdam, Appelweg combines efficiency and ecological design to provide high-quality homes for young people, status holders, starters, and essential workers.

The buildings use a hybrid timber structure with extensive biobased materials—storing a significant amount of carbon and drastically reducing environmental impact compared to conventional construction. Every component is designed for reuse: from CLT and timber walls to reversible connections and modular water retention systems that manage rainfall and support biodiversity along the waterfront. The result is a climate-positive neighborhood addition that fosters community, inclusivity, and long-term value, proving that sustainable, circular construction can also be socially impactful.

About the Remover

Moos is a Dutch housing innovator dedicated to tackling the housing shortage and the climate crisis simultaneously. Their philosophy—build fast, build biobased, build to last—centers on modular, circular systems that minimize the use of virgin materials and maximize long-term value. Moos develops projects through a collaborative partner ecosystem of housing associations, municipalities, architects, and contractors, ensuring shared responsibility throughout the full life cycle of design, construction, operation, and reuse.

Through the Oncra Certification process, Moos Appelweg quantifies and verifies the long-term carbon storage achieved by its biobased construction, turning an implicit climate benefit into a measurable, tradable asset. The certified carbon removal credits ensure transparent management of the carbon locked into the timber structure and create incentives for more biobased building across the sector. With its permanent-quality yet flexible homes, Moos demonstrates that scalable, climate-positive housing can be delivered quickly—building better cities today while storing carbon for generations to come.
