Project details

This project establishes a 200-hectare bamboo-based land restoration and carbon removal system on degraded and largely fallow land in Kipuka, DRC. The project increases Total Ecosystem Carbon (TEC) through the growth of bamboo biomass and improvements in soil organic carbon, while simultaneously supporting biodiversity, food security, and local livelihoods.

Two bamboo species (Bambusa vulgaris and Bambusa balcooa) are planted due to their high growth rates, adaptability, and carbon sequestration potential. The system integrates agroforestry elements, including cassava and maize intercropping, and preserves existing trees and shrubs to maintain ecological balance. Over time, the project aims to regenerate soil quality, reduce erosion, and create a resilient, productive landscape.
